Why Rebuild New Jersey
Driving around the Jersey Shore after Superstorm Sandy, I (Rebuild New Jersey founder Joseph Hughes) knew immediately that the rebuilding process would take years, not weeks or months. We have all seen the destruction and it is devastating. It’s intimidating. We want to ignore it and pretend it didn’t happen, but we can’t because it did.
I was in New Orleans 8 months after Katrina, then every year thereafter. As an annual visitor, I saw the slow rebuilding process unfold. When a tragedy of this magnitude strikes, the amount of resources, information, and logistics immediately becomes overwhelming. Towns, counties, and states are forced to organize, to invent systems for doing things they have never had to do. Information becomes fragmented.
Rebuild New Jersey aims to play a small but important role in the organization and communication of resources during this lengthy rebuilding process. We are creating the hub for connecting contractors with homeowners and business owners who need their services. It is an overwhelming undertaking, but we are taking the first steps by launching this online directory.
The site will evolve as the needs of the community evolve. We have been patient in the site’s development. We have been speaking with as many local contractors and homeowners as possible to get feedback and ideas to make this the most valuable resource possible.
Thank you for being a part of our journey. We look forward to contributing and providing a valuable experience to everyone.
