Contractors in Ocean County Become Advisers
The roles for many contractors in Ocean County, one of the hardest hit areas from Superstorm Sandy, have assumed new roles in addition to their traditional roles. Because there is so much complexity surrounding the rebuilding process, contractors have been playing the roles of advisers, consultants, and liaisons to local homeowners and business owners.
Contractors in Ocean County and elsewhere have been helping homeowners navigate the insurance claims process. Homeowners either do not know where to go to apply for grants and loans, or they have and just did not get enough money to restore their homes to pre-storm condition. In this case, contractors are usually able to help with sound advice because they are the ones on the street everyday speaking with homeowners and learning about various options available to them.
Many times, homeowners just want to know what things cost, so they can begin to plan. I took a call from a homeowners in Lavallette yesterday who was just looking for some guidelines on what things such as demolition, new construction, modular construction, and flood insurance costs. She was just looking for ballpark numbers because she did not know where to begin. This is where contractors in Ocean County can really step in and help homeowners make educated decisions.
Another area where contractors in Ocean County have been able to help is in regard to the FEMA flood maps. There is a lot of information out there, and some of it is still conflicting. People just don’t know what the real facts are, so they are turning to their contractors to guide them to the right answers.
To most contractors, these new roles have been a boon to their business. Being able to advise homeowners of their options, in an objective way, enables contractors in Ocean County to become trusted advisers to homeowners, demonstrate their expertise, help, and, from a business perspective, differentiate themselves from their competition and ultimately grow their business the right way. If I were a contractor, I would be excited about the increased opportunities to be an adviser or consultant to people here at the Jersey Shore.
If you have any experience with this, either as a contractor or a homeowner, please feel free to share in the comments!
